Most people have heard of near death experiences (NDE) which can occur when the person’s body goes through extreme duress with almost catastrophic results. Those who come back, in many cases talk about the positive, life altering effect it had on them.
What a lot of people don’t know is that you can have out of body experiences (OBE) without having to go through the physical trauma that accompanies the NDE. Some refer to this as astral travel.
But why would someone want to have an out of body experience in the first place?
Simply put, once you do, you will know for a fact that there is life beyond the physical, that you are more than your physical body. So much more!
Another added benefit, and this is a huge one too, is that you come to understand the power of your thoughts. We have all heard the phase “You create your reality” but because in our realm we have a buffer of time, it is not as obvious as in other dimensions. And that is a good thing. Even though a lot of time we want something right away, there are many, many times when we are grateful that our thoughts don’t manifest instantly. (Have you ever thought of snuffing someone’s light out just because you were so frustrated with them at that moment? Of course, once you cooled down, you probably did not even remember thinking that). Thank God for the buffer of time, right? In our world, it takes time for thoughts to get momentum, but once it does, you see the manifestation of it, good or bad. However, in the inner dimensions, whatever you think instantly manifests. If you think of flying, off you go. If you think of a loved one, there you are with them. If you have subconscious fears, well, those too will shape your experience.
A little side note: This is also the way spirit communicates. All they need to do is think of you and they are right there with you. All you have to do is think of them and you send out the call to them.
I had my first conscious OBE 10 years ago. I am saying conscious because, are you ready for this?, we all travel out of our body at night. Maybe not every night, I don’t know, but very often. Unfortunately, when this happens, we are busy snoozing and missing out on the fun! Have you ever had flying dreams, or dreams when you are traveling on a bus, train, car, etc with high speed? Those are part of your out of body experience but because you are not really conscious and the mind tends to interpret what you don’t know to the closest thing you do, it translates your flying into traveling.
So how do you have a conscious OBE? It is something that can come easily to some and might take a lot of work for others. I am personally part of the latter group. It takes a lot of determination and work but the concept itself is quite simple. You have to find a way to keep your mind awake while you let your physical body fall completely asleep. But because our mind is conditioned to fall asleep when the body does as well, it can be tricky keeping it awake enough, teetering on the borderline of consciousness. When we go to sleep at night, we go through mental changes. Our thoughts slow down sooner or later, depending on how tired we are or how busy or interesting our day was. Then we start to zone out a little bit, getting caught in weird train of thoughts, sometimes seeing images in front of our closed eyes, or even scenes playing out (hypnagogic imagery) until we slowly lose consciousness. In the meantime, our body starts to feel heavy, and hard to move (some people report sleep paralysis and if you don’t know what is happening, it can be quite frightening as you are unable to move your physical body. Sleep paralysis is part of the normal separation process, but I will get back to this in a minute).
OK, so what happens when you go through this separation process consciously?
In my experience, once your body is fully relaxed and your mind is quieted down, you lose awareness of your physical body. (I personally mostly feel the above mentioned sleep paralysis upon returning into the physical body). Then, I start feeling what I can only describe as a quickening and a surge of strong vibrations coming over me that goes from head to toes and a loud, hissing shhhh sounds. Some people report hearing words spoken, singing, airplane roaring. These “symptoms” are perfectly normal, albeit scary for someone who has not experienced them before. Others might not experience any of these symptoms or just some of it, I am just describing my own experiences. Once the vibrations are strong, I experience a split second of darkness when my consciousness transitions into the astral body and then I can just think of moving or floating upward and so it is. Walking through doors and walls are quite interesting too! Getting back into the physical body is easier than you think. Just thinking of the physical body will snap you right back. So does fear. This can be frustration when you just “got out” and wanted to explore a little bit. I personally never had the fear of getting lost or not being able to get back into my sleeping body and I have never heard of anyone having trouble either. I have to stress that this is a perfectly safe and natural thing we do, it is just not many people do it consciously. There is a great collection of teachers and books out there if you want to further explore this amazing topic. Robert Monroe was a leading expert who discovered out of body traveling quite accidentally, he has several books detailing his journeys. There is also William Buhlman whose books I found great. “Adventures beyond the body” has several great techniques to try. Graham Nicholls and Robert Bruce are great experts as well.
I hope I was able to raise some interest in those of you who never had an OBE before. I can only say that once you do, your life will never be quite the same and your consciousness will expand beyond anything you can imagine. You awaken to a whole new world. Happy travels!
